Dear fellow readers, let's meet in July to discuss Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert—a razor-sharp portrait of romantic longing and self-deception colliding with the mediocrity of provincial life. f you choose to read in English, I would recommend the translations by Geoffrey Wall or Lydia Davis.

Here are some questions I would like to discuss with you during our meeting:
• Is it really love that Emma is longing for?
• What role do material objects—clothes, décor, gifts—play in her dreams and desires?
• Emma reads a great deal. Is she a good, careful reader? What does she read for—and how does this shape her expectations of life?
• Do you sympathize with Emma, judge her, or both?

We could also briefly discuss the novel's movie adaptation of 2015 directed by Sophie Barthes featured Mia Wasikowska. Would you agree with the director’s interpretation?

Hier zijn enkele vragen die ik tijdens onze bijeenkomst graag met jullie wil bespreken:
• Is het werkelijk liefde waar Emma naar verlangt?
• Welke rol spelen materiële objecten — kleding, interieur, cadeaus — in haar dromen en verlangens?
• Emma leest veel. Is ze een goede, aandachtige lezer? Waar leest ze voor — en hoe beïnvloedt dit haar verwachtingen van het leven?
• Leef je met Emma mee, oordeel je over haar, of beide?

The idea behind Just Another Book Club is to read—and reread—well-known classics and hidden gems from across countries and centuries, all connected by a shared theme. Each season, we’ll follow one central subject and explore how different writers use it to examine larger ideas.

This first season is dedicated to adultery—because nothing says “relaxing evening” quite like love, desire, moral dilemmas, and social judgment. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, join us on this reading adventure.

Daar zijn we dan: Just Another Book Club!
Het idee achter Just Another Book Club is om bekende klassiekers én verborgen parels uit verschillende landen en eeuwen te lezen — en herlezen — verbonden door een gedeeld thema. Elk seizoen staat één centraal onderwerp centraal en onderzoeken we hoe verschillende schrijvers dat gebruiken om grotere thema’s te verkennen.

Dit eerste hoofdstuk staat in het teken van overspel — want wat zegt nu meer “ontspannen avond” dan liefde, verlangen, morele dilemma’s en sociaal oordeel? Klinkt dat als jouw ideale avond, ga dan met ons mee op dit leesavontuur.
