We will begin with The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne—a classic novel about adultery, social punishment, and moral hypocrisy.
During this meeting, we’ll take some time to discuss our insights and questions. Questions like:
• Did Hester’s silence feel noble, frustrating, protective, self-destructive, or proud to you?
• Which felt more cruel to you: the community’s punishment of Hester, Dimmesdale’s silence, or Chillingworth’s revenge?
• By the end, did you feel that Hester had been defeated, transformed, liberated, or absorbed back into the society that punished her?

Is there anything else you would like to bring to the discussion? Please feel very welcome to do so!
We could also briefly discuss the novel’s 1995 film adaptation starring Demi Moore and Gary Oldman—since it is always a particular pleasure to critique adaptations.

Tijdens deze bijeenkomst nemen we de tijd om onze inzichten en vragen te bespreken. Vragen zoals:
• Voelde Hesters stilte voor jou nobel, frustrerend, beschermend, zelfdestructief of juist trots?
• Wat voelde voor jou het meest wreed: de bestraffing van Hester door de gemeenschap, de stilte van Dimmesdale of de wraak van Chillingworth?
• Had je aan het einde het gevoel dat Hester verslagen was, getransformeerd, bevrijd of opnieuw opgenomen in de samenleving die haar had veroordeeld?

This first season is dedicated to adultery—because nothing says “relaxing evening” quite like love, desire, moral dilemmas, and social judgment. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, join us on this reading adventure.

Daar zijn we dan: Just Another Book Club!
Het idee achter Just Another Book Club is om bekende klassiekers én verborgen parels uit verschillende landen en eeuwen te lezen — en herlezen — verbonden door een gedeeld thema. Elk seizoen staat één centraal onderwerp centraal en onderzoeken we hoe verschillende schrijvers dat gebruiken om grotere thema’s te verkennen.
Dit eerste hoofdstuk staat in het teken van overspel — want wat zegt nu meer “ontspannen avond” dan liefde, verlangen, morele dilemma’s en sociaal oordeel? Klinkt dat als jouw ideale avond, ga dan met ons mee op dit leesavontuur.

Deze boekenclub zal grotendeels Engelstalig zijn, maar voel je vooral welkom als je op welke manier dan ook een connectie voelt met de boeken en thema’s.
