Book banning in practice part 1: Exploring book bans and censorship through history

Why do books get banned? Who decides what we are allowed to read? And what happens when access to a book is restricted?

Book Banning in Practice is a two-part event exploring book bans and censorship through history, discussion and a unique reading experiment.

During the first session, we’ll take a closer look at the history of book banning and censorship, from the Index Librorum Prohibitorum to present-day movements such as Moms for Liberty. Through a number of striking examples, we’ll explore what it actually means when a book is banned—and whether it is really possible to control who gets to read what.

But censorship is not just something that happens in history books or somewhere else in the world. During this session, we’ll also read and discuss a short children’s story and reflect on our own relationship with censorship, access and freedom of choice.

At the end of this meeting, a special experiment will be introduced.

Book Banning in Practice is part of De week van het verboden boek, and is organized by de Bibliotheek Regio Eindhoven in collaboration with Dead Writers, the Classics Book Club.

Tijdens Book Banning in Practice duiken we in de wereld van boekverboden en censuur. Van historische verboden boeken tot hedendaagse discussies: aan de hand van bijzondere voorbeelden ontdekken we wat er gebeurt wanneer toegang tot verhalen wordt beperkt.

We lezen, bespreken en denken na over onze eigen relatie met censuur en vrijheid van lezen. En aan het einde van de avond start een bijzonder experiment dat een week later wordt vervolgd...
